What were the top phrases that we should have been looking at for our Beauty Clients

on the lead up to christmas?

According to Google Insights, for December 2008, we should have focused upon:

hair
perfume
tattoo
ghd
fitness
face
tattoos
perfume shop
boots
beauty

Firstly, our clients, www.beautyexpert.co.uk will be pleased as they are #3 for

‘beauty’.  But, what of the other terms?

Potentially, there are three brands in this list (if we assume boots to mean the

brand rather than the footwear and perfume shop to mean ‘The Perfume Shop’) – GHD,

The Perfume Shop and Boots.  In fact, the only definite brand is GHD.

Some of our clients sell GHD Hair Straighteners, yet we have never chased the term?
Is it worth it in such a saturated market.  For the term, GHD (using adwords keyword

tool) in December there were approx 1830000 searches for this term alone.
How far down the long tail should a client go before it is not even worth stocking

the items?

Apparently, the top terms related to GHD were: (approx no. searches: December)

straighteners (1220000)
ghd straighteners (550000)
hair (24900000)
ghd hair (673000)
hair straighteners (673000)
ghd straighteners (550000)
ghd hair straighteners (368000)
ghd purple (none?)
pink ghd (165000)
ghd styler (135000)

The long tail must be massive!  To glean any good effort (and profit from discount

bulk buying) for the long tail you would either have to have a range of sites

focussing on random long tail phrases or start picking them up with PPC.

Take the term, ‘ghd hair straighteners’, in Google UK there are 526,000 competing

pages, but surely most searchers have actually found what they are looking for by

putting in terms at the head end of the long tail?

So, should we chase the term, ‘GHD Hair Straighteners’ for our Clients?
