Luton Airport Facebook Fail

Luton airport have been under fire after their social media agency put a picture of a plane crash that took place at another airport on its Facebook page.

The hugely offensive image showed the aftermath of a horrible accident in which a child died and alongside the photo this caption had been written:

“Because we are such a super airport….this is what we prevent you from when it snows……Weeeee :)”

The image was only online for a few minutes but attracted appalled reactions. Luton Airport has issued an apology.

Pinterest launch analytics tool

On Tuesday 12 March Pinterest launched its own free analytics tool – Pinterest Web Analytics. This was a predicted and much-awaited step after Pinterest released business accounts back in November. Companies reluctant to view Pinterest as a serious marketing tool will need to recognise this as yet another step into the commercial sector by the image-sharing social network.

Marketers using already existing Pinterest analytical tools that show measurable statistics, such as Pinalytics should bear in mind that Pinterest’s own analytical offering is nowhere near as robust at the moment. However, Pinterest Web Analytics is free and can offer some useful insight nonetheless.

In terms of features, Pinterest’s analytics offering provides business pages with impressions, clicks, visitors, reach and repins metrics, all in Google Analytics-style graphs available for any time frame. Users can also view their most repinned and most clicked pins ever on two separate tabs. There is no demographic information at this stage but you can look at which days tend to produce most traffic and engagement. You can also export the information into a CSV file.

This advance from Pinterest will hopefully influence companies already using Pinterest to further their strategy based on the insight provided by the tool. Analysed correctly, Pinterest Web Analytics could prove to be really advantageous for ecommerce brands.

Facebook redesign Timeline

Facebook is rolling out a new design to the Timeline that highlights books, films, music and more that you’ve ‘liked’. as well as what you’ve consumed through apps like Netflix.

Manually entered posts now stay on the right and recent activity is more prominently displayed on the left, along with the ‘About’ details, ‘Friends’, ‘Photos’ and ‘Places’ information. The ‘About’ tab now has a new ‘Edit Sections’ menu, which lets you select apps and content types to highlight on your Timeline.

Facebook’s aim is to have the Timeline represent a person’s identity. By allowing people to show off the apps and media they have liked more prominently on the page, Facebook now has the ability to provide more targeted ads.
