This week’s digital marketing news is quite Google-heavy with something sweet for dessert. With algorithm update rumours, changes to the search interface for different devices and a surprising twist in the naming conventions of the next Android operating system, there’s a lot to go through.

Last week, rumours circulated that Google had rolled out significant updates on 21 August and 4 September. However, the search giant has refused to confirm these suspicions.
SEOs and webmasters were the first to voice their concern by complaining that their rankings and traffic from Google search results drastically declined.
If there was a change, it could be part of the Panda rolling update or a change in the Penguin algorithm. However, as Google is likely to confirm whether there was an update or what such an update might have entailed, we can only wait and see what changes these alleged updates bring about.
Google is rolling out another interface test, this time for tablets. Similar to the one they did a couple of weeks ago for mobile search, it offers users a cleaner design that resembles Google Now’s card-like interface.
Could this be rolled out over all tablet and mobile platforms in the near future? It’s likely only a matter of time.
Google appeared to be performing even more experiments last week. This time it’s the inclusion of film reviews within search results, as well as adding microdata for flights.
The search engine now answers the searcher’s query using the most popular aggregrators for film reviews, if available, and allows users to click through if they want more information.
However, will this cause clickthrough rates for review websites to drop, and will other products such as games, apps and electronics soon be accompanied by ratings in the SERPs? Additionally, perhaps the most pressing question of all: is Google trying to keep people from leaving the SERPs or are they simply being helpful to users?
Google have officially announced what the next version of their Android operating system (4.4) will be called: KitKat.
Previous Android operating systems have all been named after various sweet treats, this latest addition following the likes of Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread. Indeed, KitKat itself was rumoured to be known as Key Lime Pie.
KitKat have got in on the act themselves in grand style, with their current website a well-executed parody of technology sites. In addition to this, 50 million KitKat bars in 19 countries will have prominent Android branding and feature competitions to win a Nexus 7 tablet or Google Play gift cards.
