LinkedIn buys SlideShare

Yesterday it was announced that LinkedIn, a social network for professionals, will be purchasing SlideShare for close to $119 million in cash and stocks (reportedly split 45% cash the 55% stocks).

“Presentations are one of the main ways in which professionals capture and share their experiences and knowledge, which in turn helps shape their professional identity,” said LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner. “These presentations also enable professionals to discover new connections and gain the insights they need to become more productive and successful in their careers, aligning perfectly with LinkedIn’s mission and helping us deliver even more value for our members. We’re very excited to welcome the SlideShare team to LinkedIn.”

SlideShare’s aim is to help professionals discover “people through content and content through people”. There have been over nine million presentations uploaded since it was founded in October 2006, with over 29 million unique visitors according to comScore.

The two business-focused platforms go hand in hand, meaning that professionals connected on LinkedIn will now be able to share presentations within the site.

It is expected that the acquisition will finish later on this year if regulators approve the move.

Facebook Get Offer

You may have noticed the introduction of ‘Get Offer’ posts in your News Feed in the last few days. This is a new action that is currently in beta and is available to a limited amount of local business pages. It allows the admin to create an offer from the page’s status bar, which will then be featured in its fans’ News Feeds. To redeem the offer, all you need to do is click ‘Get Offer’. You will then get sent an email from Facebook with the offer details, which is then showed to staff when purchasing the offer.

Not enough cats on the internet

If, like me, you are a cat lover/weird cat lady, you’ll know what I mean when I say sometimes there just aren’t enough cats on the internet. Apparently Canadian cat treat company Temptations Canada agreed with this sentiment and have created a plug in called Kitty Cat Hijack, downloadable from their Facebook Page.

When you are bored or feeling sad from lack of cats on any webpage, you can click the plug in and a packet of treats will appear on the right hand side. You shake the packet to summon cats, and the more you shake the treats the more cats that arrive until the page is completely overtaken.

Viral video

Although this isn’t strictly viral, I chose to include it today in the hope that we could get it started. So in the spirit of today: May the 4th be with you.

Infographic time

Seeing as it’s Star Wars day, I thought it would be good to bring you 19 Things You Didn’t Know About Star Wars. I know this is a bold claim, so apologies if you already knew all of these!
