Friday Social Round Up: Google+ Communities, New Twitter Local Trends and YouTube Guide
This morning we arrived at work to see that Google+ has launched its new ‘Communities’ section. Google’s senior VP of engineering, Vic Gundotra, announced the new feature. Communities are basically groups dedicated to specific topics. These groups can either be made private (allowing them to be utilised for work projects), or otherwise made public to encourage a community to form around interests such as hobbies and video games.
Gundotra said “We started Google+ in the first place to make online sharing as meaningful as the real thing. Too often, our online tools miss the subtlety and substance of real-world interactions, and Google+ aims to fix this. Fortunately we’ve got a vibrant community to guide us.”

In the same blogpost, Google also revealed that they have brought the SnapSeed app to the Android platform. According to the blog the app features:
- Basic adjustments like straighten, crop and colour tuning
- Creative filters like drama, black & white, and vintage that you can apply individually or in combination
- Control Point technology to selectively enhance your photo—to brighten just a face, for instance, or deepen just the sky
- The ability to share your creations via Google+ and other services
Finally, Google also announced this week that they have surpassed over 500 million profiles. 135 million of these users are active on a monthly basis.
Twitter launches trends in 100 new cities
A big plus for local trends is they are less likely to be dominated by Justin Bieber and One Direction related hashtags.
YouTube has had a bit of a revamp as well as adding the desktop-exclusive ‘Guide’ feature to all devices. On the companies blog they have left the following statement
“Those of you who use YouTube most have learned the secret to making it even better—find the channels you love and subscribe, subscribe, subscribe,” the company says in a blog post. “Last year we began to make it easier to subscribe to the channels you care about by introducing a Guide on the home page. When you add subscriptions to your Guide, you organize YouTube around what you like, available whenever you watch YouTube. Today, we’re taking the next step by bringing your subscription-filled Guide with you across both the site and all devices, as your best source of what to watch on YouTube.”
The changes to the layout include repositioning of the video titles, a more obvious subscribe button and the playlist view of videos (pictured below).
