Friday Social Round Up: Timeline pages launch, Google commenter and Friends Reunited is back
Google third party comments tool
It has been reported that Google are working on a third party commenting system which would allow users to comment on other websites using their Google account. It would work similarly to the Facebook comment plug-in that has become very popular in recent months, the only difference is that comments would be indexed and integrated into search engine results. The commenting system will probably draw users back to Google+ and prompt business to start using other G+ features like Hangouts to interact with existing and new clients.
This could cause problems for Facebook as the indexed comments could significantly boost the search result positions, although this is unlikely as sites that already use the Facebook plug-in will most likely add the Google commenter as an additional choice. In the end it will be down to which the customers prefer to use and I think we all know Facebook would win this battle at the moment.
Facebook Timeline Judgement Day
Today all Facebook Pages have moved over the Timeline. So let’s look at some of our favourite designs:
Seeing Aunt Bessie’s Facebook cover photo makes me instantly want it to be Sunday; I can literally taste my Aunt Bessie’s Yorkshire Puddings smothered in gravy!
Topshop have used the cover photo to promote this season’s pastel trend, it will be interesting to see if this is updated each season to reflect the key trend.
Manchester United’s Timeline is by far my favourite, no I’m not a fan of the team, but they are the first brand I have seen to fully populate their timeline right back to when the team was founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football club. They have uploaded pictures of teams and games over the ages.
Interactivity Marketing have made their cover photo into an infographic which I think is a very unique idea.
On Wednesday night there was a very exciting announcement that some people have been waiting years for, it has been confirmed that there will be an Anchorman 2! The legendary Ron Burgundy (Will Farrell) appeared on Conan O’Brien to make the announcement. The video of this interview was uploaded 1 day ago and has already had just under 3Million views.
Do you remember Friends Reunited? It’s back! Well apparently it never left us, we just left it! Friends Reunited has had a massive makeover and is now free to use. There have been some other changes too. Owner Brightsolid have teamed up with the Press Association and the British Library to allow users to attach old material, such as newspaper clippings, to their own “memory box”.
Chief executive Chris van der Kuyl said: “It’s about every blast from your past – every kind of great memory you have.”
Do you think it will be a big success or is it just too similar to Timeline?
