My journey from Student to SEO
It was drilled into me at an early stage of my University career that I had to make things happen for myself, and build on my skills outside of the classroom. There was always emphasis on University of Brighton students taking part in extra-curricular activities to gain experience in business.
In my first year I secured an internship with a Brighton digital agency working with some impressive clients and projects including MTV and Samsung. This gave me a thirst for working in digital and I knew if I was to secure my dream job I would have to keep this level of dedication. Outside of the classroom over the next few years were important times to get myself out and about, and gain any experience I could. I spent a year working in digital marketing for a FTSE company in London, which helped me grow as a person, and mature my skills.
When I started my fourth and final year of University, I went all out for experience, so I could go into potential job interviews with plenty of relevant ammunition. I started to volunteer at the Brighton & Hove Chamber of Commerce on a part-time basis, helping them out with admin work and anything they needed. I learnt so much here about the business environment in Sussex and got to meet so many amazing people who had their own companies. I regularly attended networking events and business building exhibitions, such as representing the Chamber for the ‘Ride the Wave’ food & drink event; an event set up between them and the council to help small businesses push through the recession.
During my last year of University, I also helped with a basic social media strategy for an up-and-coming mineral water company based in Sussex, and started my own website based around Twitter; nowtweet.it. I also volunteered some days to help out with the CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) events and Brighton SEO conferences which built my confidence around industry professionals and provided plenty of inspiration.
All my efforts over the last 4 years have been rewarded, as Fresh Egg recognised my achievements and took me on as a junior SEO engineer – which is going great so far. I have just received a 2:1 degree in Business & Marketing, and Brighton University presented me with an award at Graduation for best contribution to local industry.
I am extremely happy about these valuable recognitions for all the hard work I’ve put in, and hope to build my career at Fresh Egg and develop into a world class SEO.
