Digital Marketing News Round Up: Bing Ranking Factors, Bing It On and Bing Pre-Render to IE11, plus Google Places for Business Android App

Bucking the trend of recent Digital Marketing News editions, this week’s round up concentrates on developments in the world of Bing, with a little bit of Google news thrown in for good measure. So, without further ado, what’s new in the world of digital marketing this week?

Searchmetrics releases Bing ranking factors study

Digital marketing analytics suite provider, Searchmetrics, has released a study on the ranking factors for Bing.com. The study is similar to its previous correlation studies into Google ranking factors, and evaluates the factors that differentiate pages that appear higher up in the Bing SERPs from those that appear further back in organic search results.

According to the study, the top three ranking factors are:

  • Google +1s
  • Facebook comments
  • Facebook shares

The study also revealed that brands rank higher within Bing – similar to those results seen in Google SERPs. Social signals, number of backlinks and quality of content were also shown to be strong ranking factors too.

Bing It On campaign hits the UK

Bing has launched its Bing It On campaign in the UK, after a study from the Microsoft search engine revealed that more Britons prefer the results it returns than those provided by Google.

The blind study conducted by Bing asked 1,000 Britons to compare side-by-side search results pages from Bing and Google for 10 search queries. The results show that:

  • 53% of people surveyed picked Bing search results more often
  • 34% of people picked Google results more often
  • 13% of people chose Bing and Google results equally

Bing introduces ‘pre-render’ results to IE11

On 14 October, Bing announced a new pre-render feature, which is available for Internet Explorer 11. This feature will automatically download and render the top results page from Bing SERPs using the IE11 pre-render tag.

This development has been launched by Bing as part of an ongoing mission to decrease the time users spend searching, by delivering popular results faster.

John Psaroudakis, Program Manager of Bing Core Search, said:

"If you are a website owner, we encourage you to learn more and use the pre-render tag today to boost your own visitors’ experience with your site. The tag is particularly helpful in scenarios where you can anticipate your user’s next action with a high degree of confidence. For instance, try pre-rendering the top article in your homepage, or the next page in an article page."

Google Places for Business Android app

Google has released a new app which allows the owners of small to medium businesses to manage their Google Places for Business listing from their Android device.

Currently, this app is only available for US-based businesses, but it allows them to update their business information and post updates and photos to their Google+ Local page via their Android device.

It also offers basic analytics data, such as impressions and actions metrics, and any changes made inside the app will be reflected across Google properties including SERPs, Maps, G+ Local and mobile search. It is, however, worth noting that the app does not allow business owners to respond to customer reviews or create new listings.
