The UK’s fastest growing companies are on the Stock Market, right? And I guess they must be in IT, or maybe defence, or oil? As to private companies, they’re probably tiny by comparison, aren’t they, and not making much money? Wrong, wrong and again wrong.

The fastest growing companies in the UK are irrefutably and resolutely private. Don’t believe us? The Top 10 companies in the Real Business/LDC Hot 100 grew by a staggering 249 per cent. We analysed the growth of the UK’s 10 fastest growing quoted companies for comparison (see box, right). They grew by a mere 161 per cent.

The Sanctuary is listed at number 20, provides a welcome reprieve from London’s madding crowds. This women-only day spa in Covent Garden has raised guest numbers from 40,000 to 64,000 a year. And prospects are good: last year it bought back the licence to make its own-brand beauty products in a £23m private equity-backed deal.
