Twitter passes 500 million registered users

According to statistical monitoring site, TwoPCharts, at 18:06 local time tonight, Twitter passed the 500 million registered users barrier, cementing its current position as the second largest social media network in the world.

Interestingly, despite reaching this monumental landmark, it isn't the most used social network in any one single country, instead having a very diverse and broad set of users from all corners of the globe.

However, Twitter does have more registered users than people that live in Britain, Russia, Japan, France and Germany combined.

In the last six months Twitter has rung the changes; under pressure to monetize its business by investors eager to cash in on the "Facebook phenomenon," yet it's still struggling to turn its user base in to a gold mine in the way Facebook has.

The latest achievement in the brief life (it only began in 2007) of the network might not be celebrated by many and some have rightly pointed out the figure does not mean active users, however it's another landmark achievement, not only for Twitter but social media in general.

On average, more than ten new accounts are created on Twitter every second and  it's showing no signs of slowing down. It may be a while before they catch up to the mighty Facebook in registered users, but it reached 500 million faster than Facebook did.

The next notable landmark could be for Facebook to reach one billion users, which it is expected to achieve by the middle of 2012. However Google+ may also be celebrating 250 million users by then, having recently surpassed 100 million in less than a year since its launch; the fastest growing social media network of all time.
