First Page Listings

According to a recent study carried out in the US into Search Engine usage by Jupiter Research and marketing firm iProspect most visitors to a website will not go beyond the first page of results returned by a search engine. Almost none will go beyond the third page to find what they are looking for.

The study, covering 2,369 people found that a third of users believe companies on the first page of results are top brands relating to their search term.

The study also showed that first page results have increased in importance since the last study carried out in 2002. 62% of visitors clicked a link on the first page of results, where as in 2002 this figure was 48%.

People who clicked through were also found to be more likely to continue browsing the site they had found, 90% as opposed to 81%.

These figures are based on the US market place but do give an indication that it is now even more important to gain a first page listing in the major search engines.
